STAMEL, STAMMEL
Coarse red dyed woollen material for workers' garments in Germany. This stuff is mentioned in 1628 as " a petticoate of the finest stammell," also in 1594 as " in her stammel red." The word is thought to be a corruption of Stamin; also see Stanium.
